Training with Ruthless Performance
A Message from Owner and Head Trainer, John Matulevich:
When I began my training career as a high school athlete I had a very limited view of what Strength & Conditioning workouts could do for me. In the typical fashion of an overconfident high school boy, I was obsessed with winning and improving my sports performance–and my training did just that. But over the subsequent decades of training both my clients and myself, I’ve come to appreciate strength and conditioning training in a broader context.
As an adult, now in my 30’s, my focus and my goals have shifted, my hobbies and goals span various areas of interest from mountain climbing, to backcountry hunting, alpine fly fishing, long distance bicycling, and these goals even spread into areas as seemingly innocuous as raising a healthy and happy family. But the individualized training style that we utilize at Ruthless Performance has enabled me to chase these pursuits without my own physical health ever becoming a limiting factor.
We have high school and college-aged athletes from a variety of sports who are continuing to push boundaries for themselves, their teams, and their understanding of what is possible.
Personally as an adult, I am stronger, healthier, more flexible, and generally more resilient than I’ve ever been in my life. We have a gym full of adult personal training clients who are on their own paths but have similar successes and even wild physical transformations. Our gym has clients well into late-adulthood who are continuing to get stronger and healthier than they’ve been at any point in their life thus far.
Our workouts aren’t just a vanity project to help our clients look better for beach season, although we can do that with near certainty. We can help high school and college athletes prevent sports injuries, maximize their performance, and set up healthy patterns and behaviors that can last a lifetime. As an adult, we can completely overhaul your body composition, energy levels, mood, and even change the way you think about yourself and your own physical limitations.
If you are looking for a gym where you can build the best version of yourself, then look no further.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to start the process or learn more,

Training With Us
Athlete Development Training
9th Grade – College
We take high school and college athletes from all sports and training backgrounds. Typically, we focus our training for athletes on sports injury prevention, college preparatory strength & conditioning, and we generally take pride in our ability to produce all around, highly versatile athletes.
Our Athlete Development Training is designed to supplement and build on the sport-specific skill work that an athlete is getting in their conventional high school or team practices. We also work with high school and college-aged students who are not engaged in any sport outside of our training. In this case we focus on general health, fitness, and instilling a lifelong interest in wellness.
We train athletes both in-season and out-of-season. In-season training is designed around mitigating the likelihood of overuse injuries. Out-of-season training usually involves building up skills that often get neglected during the busy in-season period of an athlete’s yearly schedule.
Our athletes are significantly less likely to get injured than athletes who do not engage in a strength and conditioning program.
On a daily basis we make dozens of athletes stronger, faster, and more resilient.
Personal Training
Post-College – Retirement
If you’re an adult looking to advance your health and fitness, we can help! Our adult clients range from typical fat loss clients to more specific goals like improving joint function, staving off osteoporosis in late-adulthood, training for a marathon, and beyond.
Our clients come in all shapes and sizes but are all united in their goal of self improvement. If you are just looking for general health and fitness, we can help! During our assessment process we can help with goal setting so that you can see and track your progress from day-to-day and week-to-week!
Whether you were a gym rat in a previous life or just starting your fitness journey, we tailor our training programs to meet you at your current level of physical fitness and slowly build on your strengths and abilities.
This is not a bootcamp where you get beat down and broken for days after a workout. We focus on incremental improvements to your fitness through a rigorous adherence to the most current scientific understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
We work around past injuries, weight restrictions, physical limitations, and your schedule!
We do not set hours at the gym so that we can match our clients’ busy schedules.
Online & Hybrid Training
Anyone, any time, anywhere
If you live across the country but want to train with us because you’ve seen us featured on sites like EliteFTS, Muscle & Strength, Swimming World Magazine, or Addicted 2 Success, we can accommodate you!
Our online training is an easy way to get high quality coaching when time and location are an issue.
Even many of our local clients choose to use hybrid training program with us, where some training is online and some is in-person. This allows clients to train from home or other gyms that may be closer or more convenient for their commute or schedule.
We have a variety of types of clients who use our online and hybrid training models including college athletes who are away at school, CrossFit athletes who need supplemental and personalized training, busy professionals, and even stay at home moms.
If you live near our training facility in Pottsville, PA we recommend starting out your training career with in-person. But no matter your schedule and fitness goals, we are committed to helping you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Workouts typically begin with an individualized warm up progression based on mobility and heart rate. Then, we progress into different ‘activation drills’ which is an extension of the warm up designed to build into the actual workout.
Then we get into the “main sets”. These are usually compound lifts that you’ve likely heard of before. Some variation of squats, presses, hinges, and pulls make up the majority of our main work. This is the most conventional aspect of our training that most looks like normal strength training exercises.
After the main sets we typically program ‘accessory lifts’ which are exercises meant to help build up your specific weak points, strengths, or generally get you closer to your goals.
Conditioning comes at the end. This is what most people typically think of as ‘cardio’ but our methods are fun, engaging, and designed to increase your heart rate. Our goal is not to have you leaving feeling crushed or beat up. BUT people can push themselves during our cardiovascular work. We try to motivate where necessary but here we typically let clients push themselves as far as they are willing to go.
After our cardio we wrap up workouts with a few light stretches to create lasting improvements to posture, flexibility, and to achieve the overall ‘cooling down’ effect.
Again, these workouts are all subject to change and are highly individualized to each clients needs, ability, training history, availability, and more.
We can not post our prices online. This is, in part, due to the unique and individualized nature of our training programs. Cost is affected by training frequency, training add-ons like custom designed at-home workouts, and more. To get a price for your specific set of circumstances, contact us. We have options for every budget and big discounts for high school and college athletes. Our online training options also allow clients to train either completely remotely at home, or in a hybrid model where some workouts are at Ruthless Performance and some are on-your-own.
Our current training facility is at 4 South Second Street, Pottsville, PA in Suites 406 and 407. But our online training protocols allow us to coach and design training programs for individuals anywhere with an internet connection.
The business model of most gyms is to try to sell you a gym membership and then hope that you don’t use it. At Ruthless Performance, we are committed to your success. We design your workouts from beginning to end with your goals, physiology, and unique training and lifestyle history all taken into account. Rather than sitting idly by and hoping you don’t notice your membership fees being withdrawn like most big-box gyms, we keep you motivated, accountable, and engaged in your success.
We typically take athletes as young as 9th grade all the way up through late adulthood. We design workouts for each individual not each individuals age, although age is certainly one factor. In 9th grade athletes we are typically focused on engaging and developing a broad array of athleticism and fundamental movement patterns. This will morph throughout high school, college, and into adulthood. We may accept athletes younger than 9th grade (some of our athletes are as young as 5th and 6th grade), but this is on a case-by-case basis.
At the other end of the spectrum, we happily take on older clients and retirees who are looking to stay in shape. In this age group we are typically looking at preserving muscle mass and maintaining bone mineral density.
Our training hours vary by the needs of our clients as well as times of year. During the school year, our availability shifts to later in the day primary 1 PM onwards until as late as 9 or 10 PM. During the summer, our scheduling tends to shift earlier in the day. But ultimately, we are trying to accommodate YOUR schedule!
You probably weren’t going to ask this but I’m answering it anyway. Yes, there are two: Kronos and Naomi. However, both have very busy schedules and are not always at the facility.
Typically we use what is called a ‘semi-private’ training model. This means that there are typically between 2-6 clients training at a time. But each client is on their own program, working at their own pace. Clients are very positive and respectful of each other and help motivate each other through their workouts.
Truly private 1-on-1 workouts are available but are subject to limited availability.
This is the hardest part! Not knowing expectations, the fear of starting, the dread of knowing that you’ve waited too long to start thinking about your health, etc… We’ve seen it all! We design our workouts so that you see success from day 1. While improvements in strength may come more slowly, improvements in flexibility and cardiovascular function tend to be noticed in the days after your very first workout!
First, we schedule an assessment to learn about your unique needs, training history, availability. During your assessment we can design a training blueprint for you which includes pricing, goal setting, and lifestyle interventions.
After our assessment we can typically design your first 4-week training cycle and have you started at the gym as soon as 48 hours later!
